Jean-Baptiste’s dream

Jean-Baptiste loves soccer and he dreams of being a teacher someday. Yet this 14-year-old boy, who lives with his mother and five siblings in Ambatobe, a remote, rural village in Madagascar, is currently unable to attend school. He suffers from abdominal pain, has bloody urine, has lost considerable weight, and is always tired. Jean-Baptiste has a parasitic disease known as schistosomiasis.
 
 

The danger lurks in the water

The elimination of the worm disease schistosomiasis is: that's the ultimate goal we're pursuing together with our partners in the Global Schistosomiasis Alliance (GSA). The new GSA awareness campaign entitled "Something in the water" provides information on how dangerous this tropical disease is, how easily it can be transmitted in water, and what the treatment options are. At the heart of the campaign is a short video showing the dangers that can lurk in the water in some regions.
 

The GPHF Minilab: Help in a suitcase

In parts of Africa, Asia and Latin America, more than 30% of the medicines sold are counterfeit. To protect consumers, the pharmaceutical supply chain must be monitored more diligently. Seeking a way to quickly detect fake medicines, the Global Pharma Health Fund – our own charitable organization – has developed a mobile, compact test kit called the Minilab.
 

From Tel Aviv to Rio

The Deutsche Philharmonie Merck is the musical ambassador of our company. The musicians of this ensemble entertain around 26,000 music enthusiasts every year, often touring internationally. In 2015, for instance, they performed in Latin America (Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo), the United Kingdom (Cambridge), and Israel (Tel Aviv).

We see ourselves as part of the community - not only at a regional level at our individual locations, but also at a global level. As both a major economic player and employer, we help contribute to the prosperity of many countries. Living our commitment to the community is therefore an integral part of who we are. We focus our efforts primarily on health initiatives, an area where we can really leverage our expertise to help solve problems. We also promote culture and education, along with providing disaster relief, especially in those regions where we operate.
