Scientist: Computational Biology/Bioinformatician (m/f)

Position Summary

EMD Serono is seeking an innovative, collaborative and enthusiastic computational protein engineer & bioinformatician to support Merck’s world class antibody and biologics drug discovery platform.

The right candidate will join a team of highly motivated, cross-disciplinary scientists and will work on projects that involve bioinformatics, protein structure analysis and design, biophysical properties prediction, antibody library design as well as novel molecular design. The candidate must be able to work closely with wet-lab protein engineers & protein chemists within Discovery Technologies to deliver high quality and innovative molecules to treat auto-immune disease and cancer.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Design, characterize and optimize therapeutic candidate drugs through computational analysis of protein sequence and structure, computational protein design and engineering
  • Develop and benchmark predictive models, apply bioinformatics and protein structure knowledge to formulate and test hypotheses to guide antibody engineering
  • Develop and apply innovative bioinformatics and computational biology tools for advancing internal technology platforms for antibody discovery and antibody engineering and providing bioinformatics support
  • Interpret and present results and conclusions from complex data analysis using innovative visualization skills and effective communication to bring scientists with different background together and foster decision-making
  • Work closely with laboratory scientists to develop novel therapeutic drug candidates.
  • Work effectively with internal and external collaborators and multidisciplinary teams composed of scientists and non-scientists to translate emerging research to guide internal programs
  • Contribute to external collaborations and partnerships

 

Qualifications and Technical proficiencies

  • Ph.D. in computational biology, bioinformatics, or a related field, with strong knowledge in structural biology, molecular biology or biochemistry (1-3 years’ experience of applied research in either an academic or industry setting preferred)
  • Proficient in computational design tools (ROSETTA, MOE, PyMOL, Schrodinger Suite, …)
  • Fluent with multiple programming languages, demonstrated ability to perform high-quality scientific programming is required (R, Matlab, Perl or Python, SQL are highly desirable)
  • Familiarity and experience applying statistical fundamentals and computational science principles applied to life science
  • Some Linux and web server administration skills
  • Experience contributing to scientific software development efforts to deliver pipelines, tools, and data analyses
  • Experience working in a cloud computing environment using Amazon Web Services (EC2 and S3), Docker, Luigi, pandas, and/or Spark
  • Demonstrated experience in quantitative analysis of high-volume biological datasets is required.

    Deep knowledge in antibody structure and variable region sequences is preferred

  • Familiarity with antibody screening and production technologies such as phage display, hybridoma generation, protein expression and purification, ELISA, FACS preferred.   
  • Working knowledge of laboratory techniques in molecular biology, cell biology and protein engineering is preferred
  • Capacity to prioritize and work independently, complete tasks and advance projects, with minimal supervision
  • Proficient written and verbal communication skills, particularly of complex information and concepts
