Your role:

Due to the growing number and scope of projects in the development phase the company is currently looking to strengthen its project leadership capabilities and is seeking to appoint an established scientific and strategic leader into the GED Lead role.

The incumbent will be placed within the QPD team, which is comprised of several groups - Quantitative Pharmacology (including Clinical Pharmacology), Drug Disposition for New Chemical or Biologic Entities (a.k.a DMPK), and Bioinformatics, and will report to a senior GED-L who reports directly to the Global Head of QPD. The title/level of the incumbent depends on the seniority and experience of the candidate.

The successful candidate will be the primary expert and scientific contact for all GED-related scientific activities, and is accountable for all aspects of a project, from initiation through project completion. He/She will lead the GED Team composed of GED scientists mainly from Drug Disposition, Quantitative Pharmacology, Nonclinical Safety, and Clinical Biomarker Development. The GED Lead is therefore core member of the program / project team.

As a functional expert and scientist, the GED lead will provide scientific leadership to the program/project team by integrating individual GED contributions to develop the GED strategy.

As a cross-functional leader of the GED Team, the GED Lead instills a sense of urgency with a strong can-do attitude in the project core team as well as GED team, identifies and drives debate around key issues and risks while keeping the big picture and long term targets in mind. Therefore, it is essential that the successful candidate brings with him/her a strong scientific pedigree and an experience in managing complex matrix teams.

This is a highly visible and interactive role requiring broad scientific understanding across the GED sciences and drug development alongside excellent teambuilding, actively collaborative & strategic capabilities. The GED Lead will participate in Project Review Meetings with the top R&D leaders of the company. Understanding and addressing stakeholder needs is crucial. Merck Biopharma is seeking candidates with further potential to take over departmental or program leader positions afterwards.

Who you are:  

  • MD, DVM or PhD in life sciences or equivalent
  • Several years of professional experience in at least one of the GED areas (>8 years).
  • Profound knowledge in clinical pharmacology and Modeling & Simulation is essential
  • Excellent knowledge of drug development & discovery processes. A focus on Oncology or Immuno- Oncology would be ideal.
  • Track record in delivering in discovery and development settings
  • Excellent knowledge of small molecule and/or biologics work packages (non-clinical and clinical) including predictive biomarker.
  • General knowledge of disease area, more in depth understanding of biology, pharmacology.
  • Excellent knowledge of regulatory requirements and submission across the main regions.
  • Good understanding about translational sciences such as, safety and biomarkers.
