Innovation Cup 2018 Teams Life Reimagined – Great minds come together at Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany
Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, the world’s oldest pharmaceutical and chemical company, will celebrate its 350th anniversary in 2018. On this occasion we will conduct a special anniversary edition of the Innovation Cup covering the fields of healthcare, synthetic biology, materials & solutions, digitalization, and bright future: new ways of working and collaborating.
The Innovation Cup will bring together a promising new generation of academic talent from the natural sciences, medicine and business administration with senior management, active researchers, and accomplished retirees. This meeting of the minds is a creative and innovative platform aimed at advancing science and technology to make the world a better place.
What is in it for you?
If you are a graduate or post-graduate student with an interest in the pharmaceutical or chemical industry, the Innovation Cup is your chance to gain in-depth knowledge about pharmaceutical and chemical research and development. All Innovation Cup participants will also be invited to the anniversary scientific conference, Curious2018 - Future InSight, where some of the brightest scientists and most accomplished entrepreneurs in the world will meet to present their work. Several keynote speakers from Curious2018 will participate as coaches in the Innovation Cup.
The three teams focusing on “life reimagined” will develop new, innovative proposals on breakthroughs in technologies that have the potential to correct genetic defects to enable cures for diseases, reprogram mesenchymal stem cells to heal injuries, and probe the mysteries of the microbiome to discover the hidden drivers of health and wellness. What technologies will unlock the potential of the future?
Who can apply:
We invite post-docs and post-graduate students in natural sciences, computer sciences and business administration from all over the world to apply for participation in the Innovation Cup. 75 students will be selected:
- Sciences: Postgraduate students in natural sciences on their way towards a PhD or working as a PostDoc in biology, chemistry, physics, medicine, biotech, bioinformatics, biochemistry, pharmacy, informatics, computer science, data science, engineering or related fields.
- Business: Advanced MBA students or recent MBA graduates with an interest in the pharmaceutical and chemical business
The cup is not open to U.S. healthcare professionals.
How it works:
During a one week Summer Camp, 75 selected postgraduate students will attend in-depth presentations about the pharmaceutical and chemical industry given by senior management, scientists and external experts. Participants will work in small teams to generate an innovative idea that addresses a scientific challenge and develop the idea into a business plan. Teams will receive coaching and guidance from world-class academic scientists, senior managers and scientists, and experienced retirees. You will learn the essentials about R&D within the pharmaceutical and chemical industry and understand how products are successfully discovered, developed and brought to market. You will learn to evaluate your ideas from a technical and business perspective and build a convincing business plan. The teams will present their business plans to a grand jury. The jury will be composed of top management and delegates from other companies and organizations. The jury will select the best business plan and present the winning team with the Innovation Cup award and cash prize of EUR 20,000. Additionally, a cash prize of EUR 5,000 will be awarded for the best business plan per category: healthy lives, synthetic biology, material & solutions, digitalization, and bright future - new ways of working and collaborating. Options to implement the best business plans will be evaluated.
