Your Role:

To collect, classify, process, and prepare EPA-regulated hazardous waste, non-regulated waste, and biohazardous waste for shipment off-site across multiple Sigma-Aldrich St. Louis facilities. This position also requires oversight and completion of other compliance aspects of EPA-regulated hazardous waste handling activities on-site.

Efficiently and safely disposes of waste generated from chemical manufacturing and operating groups. Collect production and laboratory waste materials generated on-site, determine proper disposal and handling methods for the materials, and prepare waste containers for ultimate shipment and disposal off-site. Works to improve processes, control costs, and correct safety hazards.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Processes and packs waste for disposal following all government regulations, disposal facility specifications and proper handling procedures
  • Segregates container types and sorts containers by hazard class
  • Establishes waste profiles
  • Prepares kiln ready lab packs according to government regulations and facility requirements
  • Check the compatibility of materials packed into the lab packs
  • Consolidates used PPE into cubic yard boxes for disposal and recycles satellite drums
  • Consolidates waste flammable solids into cubic yard boxes for disposal
  • Processes spills/broken containers, recovery drums to customers, and re-works
  • Loads and unloads waste hauler trucks and/or waste and clean solvent tankers
  • Loads waste hauler trucks according to DOT segregation rules
  • Orders and unloads clean solvents to provide uninterrupted tank farm service
  • Schedules and loads waste flammable liquid tankers to provide uninterrupted service and 90-day compliance
  • Blends waste flammable liquid loads to maximize allowances for water and halogen content
  • Processes empty cylinders, as applicable to the site
  • Assist maintenance with cleaning of chemically contaminated equipment
  • Handle Universal Waste, as applicable to the site 
  • Provides product/waste sampling for the special needs of the site’s product groups
  • Maintains a clean, orderly and compliant work area
  • All waste on site is properly labeled according to government regulations
  • All compromised waste containers are dealt with immediately
  • All waste areas are maintained clutter free and clean
  • All waste on site is within the allowed 90-day period
  • All aisles between waste containers are maintained at all times
  • Miscellaneous duties and tasks as assigned
  • Exemplary attendance and adherence to schedule

General Office Environment: Noise level in office environment is generally quiet.

Lab Environment: Works near moving mechanical parts. Is frequently required to wear appropriate protective gear, (hard hats, glasses/goggles, chemical resistant suits, gloves, safety shoes) and other personal protection equipment to protect themselves from toxic or corrosive chemicals in the forms of liquids, solids, vapors or airborne particles.

Distribution/Warehouse Environment: Occasionally works near moving mechanical parts. Is occasionally required to wear appropriate protective gear, (hard hats, glasses/goggles, chemical resistant suits, gloves, safety shoes) and other personal protection equipment to protect themselves from toxic or corrosive chemicals in the forms of liquids, solids, vapors or airborne particles. The work area may occasionally be wet, humid, or abnormally hot or cold. 

Facility Services Environment: Regularly works near moving mechanical parts, outdoor weather conditions, sources of electrical shock, vibrations, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals for which protective equipment and procedures must be used. Occasionally works in high, precarious places. Must have valid driver’s license. Performs work related travel.

Physical Requirements:

If performing office duties: Employee is required to sit, stand, hear, and use hands to operate all office equipment. Employee must view computer monitors for long periods of time. Vision requirements are close vision and the ability to adjust focus. Employee occasionally will be required to lift, generally no more than 25 pounds.

If performing lab duties: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, reach above the shoulder, stoop, kneel, twist, crouch or crawl for long periods of time. The employee must be able to talk, hear, taste and smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 80 pounds unassisted and ability to push and pull heavy materials to complete assignment. The employee may be required to lift more poundage with assistance. Specific vision requirements of this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Regularly uses phones, computers, computer monitors and all office/laboratory equipment. The employee is also required to type at a computer keyboard and have the ability to read CRTs/computer monitors.

If performing warehouse/distribution duties: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to sit, stand, walk, reach above the shoulder, stoop, kneel, twist, crouch or crawl for long periods of time. The employee must be able to talk, hear, taste and smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds unassisted. Employee may be required to move more than 50 pounds with assistance. Specific vision requirements of this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Regularly uses phones, computers, computer monitors and all office/laboratory equipment. The employee is also required to type at a computer keyboard and have the ability to read CRTs/computer monitors.

If performing facility services duties: Ability to walk long distances and be able to stay on your feet for eight hours. The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, reach above the shoulder, stoop, kneel, twist, crouch or crawl for long periods of time. Use hands and feet to operate equipment. Occasionally lift 50 pounds unassisted and additional weight with assistance. Specific vision requirements of this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee may be required to wear a hard hat, safety shoes, eye protection, hearing protection, protective gloves, respirator and face shield (when required).

Minimum Requirements:

  • High School Diploma

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associates degree in Chemistry or Chemical/Science industry.
  • 1+ years of additional education in chemistry required -OR- 1+ years of work experience required in Chemistry or Chemical/Science industry.
  • Basic mathematics
  • Basic computer skills with Windows, Word and Excel
  • Knowledge in Access is a plus.
  • Operation of forklift, pallet mule, drum lifter, drum, box, and glass crusher, pumps, valves, various hand tools, rising equipment and CRT/PC. 
  • Ability to troubleshoot and correct problems independently.
  • Effective oral and communication skills.
