Your Role

The Head of Business Development, Life Science owns the process of translating the long-term strategy of the Life Sciences Business sector into inorganic growth opportunities and divestitures. S/He identifies, prioritizes and brings to execution different deal types in close and direct collaboration with the Life Science Executive Team, business teams, sector Strategy team and Group M&A. The role will comprise both, executing on bolt-on M&A and distribution/licensing deals as well as evaluating attractive adjacencies and corresponding potential transformative M&A deals on an ongoing basis. S/He will oversee the LS deal making process from scouting,  creating a funnel of opportunities, business case development to prioritization and selection of targets. S/He she will work closely with Group M&A on deal negotiation and execution.

  • Lead overall business development activities for the Life Science sector, including bolt-on M&A, divestitures, select partnership and licensing deals. Enable effective governance of business development activities via Life Science Deal Review Committee across Business Units - including target prioritization, business case development, deal terms and regular review of deal execution status for closed deals

  • Define and Partner with Executive Vice President Global Strategy and Business Development in developing and finalizing the Life Sciences deal plan that will be directly delivered by this position to the Life Science Deal Review Committee, CEO of the Life Sciences Business and ultimately, Merck Executive Board

  • Provide transparency on opportunities and engagement across global organizations when it comes to Life Sciences' business development activities

  • Partner with functional BD organizations in the Life Sciences 3 Business Units to explore opportunities as a source of innovation and ensure that local, product line or individual business BD activities are fully aligned with overall Life Sciences interests

  • Lead and coordinate stakeholder involvement to build and define the business case and ensure deal approval by Deal Review Committee and MilliporeSigma CEO

  • Lead and coordinate-licensing, or partnership process for selected assets globally

  • Partner with Corporate M&A on deal negotiation and execution, ensuring alignment with Life Science objectives

  • Deliver on ensuring our company MilliporeSigma’s image in the industry facilitates deal making – develop and maintain a strong and high-quality network, represent the company at key global events (like BIO international convention, JP Morgan etc.)

  • Role will manage a small team

  • Bring strong international external network to pharma, biotech, banks and academia to enable deal flow
     

Who You Are

Education

  • Min. 10-15 years of professional experience, with significant experience in Healthcare/Life Sciences
     

Experience

  • Min. 10-15 years of professional experience, with significant experience in Healthcare/Life Sciences

  • 5+ years of extensive leadership experience in leading negotiations and closing deals

  • Must have a proven track record of closing numerous complex deals (minimum 3-4 deals)

  • Hands on experience in business development globally across the deal value chain

  • Strong leadership skills and global BD experience

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and globally matrixed business environment, cultural adaptability

  • Sound business and financial judgment and ability to resolve challenging global problems and negotiate settlements worldwide

  • Strong communication skills to explain complex concepts to senior management

  • Ability to set global priorities and process multiple internal and external customer demand

  • Demonstrated expertise in the building, growing and servicing of a global business

  • Excellent English (Written, Oral, Negotiation)
