Position: Head of SOD R&D Thin Film

Work Location: Shizuoka, Japan

Reporting to: R&D Executive Director, Thin Film (California, U.S.)

Direct reports: 6 (Team: over 30 FTEs under the department the role manages)


Major responsibilities/Tasks:

•Responsible and accountable for lab operational safety and efficiency and for the team’s productivity

•Identify, propose and execute projects to develop and commercialize new products

•Responsible and accountable for the successful execution of development projects to achieve new product introduction milestones and pass development gates on time

•Provide technical leadership and program direction by providing technical insights and troubleshooting guidance to the team members; examine, review and evaluate the team’s technical conclusions and report to senior management

•Develop, facilitate and improve process and workflow for the team

•Provide training and coaching to direct reports, team members

•Foster a collaborative, inclusive, safe, and efficient team environment

•Manage the performance and professional development of the R&D team

•Collaborate with peer supervisors / managers to drive project progress and embody the ‘One Merck’ philosophy

•Collaborate with Product Management, Customer Applications, Marketing, Operations, and Quality teams to successfully develop and launch new products

•Provide leadership to achieve team goals


Required experiences/skills:

  • M.S. or equivalent working experience in Chemistry or related science fields, preferably associated with silicon chemistry and/or polymer science
  • ≥ 10 years of working experience in deposition process or product development in the semiconductor and adjacent industries
  • Good interpersonal, organizational and leadership skills. People management experience as line manager is must to have.
  • Strong Japanese and English skill
  • Strong empowering leadership (team motivator) with change mgt experience
