Culture & Education

We think that culture inspires people and that education can open their minds to new possibilities. That’s why we’re dedicated to providing young people with access to education and culture all over the world.

Inspiring curiosity

From artistic skills and experiences, like listening to music or creating an original piece of literature, to scientific discovery or the communication of knowledge: We think that culture can inspire people to gain new perspectives of the world. It can help those who are skeptical of change and find it difficult to accept new ideas. That’s why promoting culture and education is one of our top priorities.

We aim to inspire

Culture and education can be the key to new ideas and to an open-minded society. That’s why we support cultural and educational initiatives worldwide.

Music connects people – beyond cultures and borders. To share this experience with as many people as possible, the Deutsche Philharmonie Merck, sponsored by Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany is giving concerts all over the world.

Our musical ambassador

Classical music has a very long tradition at our company. The Deutsche Philharmonie Merck, sponsored by Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, is our musical ambassador, a professional ensemble whose concerts were attended by around 23,000 people in 2016 alone. The musicians of the Philharmonie regularly tour the world and support local initiatives. In 2015 they performed in Latin America (Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro, and São Paulo), the United Kingdom (Cambridge) and Israel (Tel Aviv). For the Latin American tour, our company partnered with three local social aid organizations to which we also donated the proceeds from concert tickets: the Association Against Cancer (Mexico), Together Against Cancer (Brazil) and the School of Music and Citizenship in Rio, with whom we share a long history of collaboration. Thanks to our efforts, around 400 socially disadvantaged children and young people have learned to play a musical instrument.

Playing with the pros

We want young people to get a feel for classical music. That’s why we collaborate with schools in Darmstadt to offer orchestra workshops for children and young people. In 2015, 50 aspiring musicians practiced with members of the Deutsche Philharmonie Merck, sponsored by Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, and performed a concert together, gaining valuable experience of playing in a professional ensemble.

Literature gives people food for thought. It motivates and inspires, and can even stimulate scientific and social change. As a forward-looking science and technology company, we seek to leverage this potential, for culture can make people more receptive to new research while also increasing its visibility. This is why we award or support five literary prizes around the world, among them, in Italy, the Premio Letterario, sponsored by Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany. This award was presented for the 14th time at a ceremony held in Rome in July 2017.

Education is the foundation on which future careers and achievements are built. But many talented young people around the world are forced to leave school early, because their families can’t afford the costs of supporting them any further. We are committed to finding ways of offering young people in this situation the opportunities they need to achieve their goals and ambitions. A striking example is the India Charitable Trust of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany: Through this non-profit foundation, we offer scholarships to young learners who might otherwise be unable to fulfill their potential. Since the start of the program in 2005 54 young people have completed their studies and are now primarily working in the tech or healthcare industry.

We are engaged in an array of education projects around the world and provide talented young individuals with support such as scholarships.

First experiments

We want to spark enthusiasm for the natural sciences among school children and promote their curiosity. That's why in early 2016 we launched SPARK, a volunteer program for our life science employees to strengthen scientific education. To date, around 4,500 employees have provided exciting insights into the world of science in classrooms and at sites in 36 countries. Around 60,000 school children put on lab coats and conducted experiments under supervision.

Another way to spark young people’s curiosity for science is our Junior Laboratory in cooperation with the Technical University Darmstadt. Our Darmstadt site also supports many German schools in awakening their students’ curiosity for science and chemistry in particular. We provide materials and share our expertise with students from first grade to high school. On top of that we also support the "Jugend forscht" competition. For more than 30 years, we've been running the state-level competition for the German Federal State of Hesse and have also hosted the national competition twice.
