Education & Culture

We think that education can open people´s minds to new possibilities and culture inspires. That’s why we give wing to creativity, passion for discovery and curiosity – especially in young people.

Awakening curiosity

To inspire a love of science in the next generation of researchers, we have set up research labs for children and adolescents. We also provide schools with materials for exciting lessons and offer continuing education to teachers. Beyond education, we also promote cultural initiatives – because music and literature inspire people.

We aim to inspire

Education and culture can be the key to new ideas and to an open-minded society. That’s why we support educational and cultural initiatives worldwide.

Education is the foundation on which future careers and achievements are built. But many talented young people around the world are forced to leave school early, because their families can’t afford the costs of supporting them any further. We are committed to finding ways of offering young people in this situation the opportunities they need to achieve their goals and ambitions. A striking example is the India Charitable Trust of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany: Through this non-profit foundation, we offer scholarships to young learners who might otherwise be unable to fulfill their potential. Since the start of the program in 2005 54 young people have completed their studies and are now primarily working in the tech or healthcare industry.

Literature gives people food for thought. It motivates and inspires, and can even stimulate scientific and social change. As a forward-looking science and technology company, we seek to leverage this potential, for culture can make people more receptive to new research while also increasing its visibility. This is why we award or support five literary prizes around the world, among them, in Italy, the Premio Letterario, sponsored by Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany. This award was presented for the 14th time at a ceremony held in Rome in July 2017.

First experiments

Boredom? That's so yesterday!
As part of SPARK, our global volunteer program, employees from our Life Science business sector share their skills and experience with students. Under this initiative, in 2017 we launched the Curiosity Cube™ as a retrofitted shipping container that has been transformed into a solar-powered mobile science lab.
Traveling more than 29,000 kilometers throughout the United States, it stopped at schools and city centers in over 85 communities. More than 38,000 students visited the mobile lab, and each one of the nearly 23,000 experiments was led by one of our employees. In 2017, more than 2,500 employees across the globe volunteered over 13,700 hours to support SPARK.

Our musical ambassador

Classical music has a very long tradition at our company. The Deutsche Philharmonie Merck, sponsored by Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, is our musical ambassador. In 2017 alone, approximately 21,000 people attended their concerts. The orchestra regularly goes on international concert tours. In November 2017, for instance, one of these tours took the musicians to Morocco, where they gave a benefit concert in Marrakesh in honor of National Cancer Day.

Science put into new words
