With a purchase price of € 10.3 billion, the 2007 acquisition of Serono S.A. from the Bertarelli family is the largest acquisition in the Darmstadt-based company’s history at the time. The Geneva-based company has 5,000 employees.

Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, achieves blue-chip standing with the Deutsche Börse
Following the meeting of its Stock Index Working Group, Deutsche Börse AG announces its decision: Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, is added to the German DAX 30 blue chip index. As of June 18, 2007, the company’s shares become a constituent of the DAX 30.
2007: Successful donation program to fight schistosomiasis
In 2007, the company enters into a partnership with the World Health Organization (WHO) to combat schistosomiasis, a widespread tropical disease in Africa. The program is called the Praziquantel Donation Program. An estimated 260 million people worldwide suffer from the worm disease.
Family business excellence award
The Darmstadt-based company receives the 14th IMD – Lombard Odier Global Family Business Award. The “Nobel prize for family companies” recognizes global business activities, exemplary corporate governance, the inclusion of multiple generations of the family, and sustainability of social engagement.
