EMD Lab @ TU Darmstadt
Scientists of TU Darmstadt and Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany are working together in a joint lab
The EMD Lab @ TU Darmstadt is part of a long-term, strategic partnership between Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany and the Technical University Darmstadt. The shared multi-disciplinary lab at the university campus Lichtwiese brings chemists, biochemists, biologists and engineers together to work on cost-efficient techniques in the area of pathogen diagnostics and the optimization of analytical detection methods. Currently, the team focuses within the topical framework of "low-instrumented diagnostics and analytics" on the development of paper-based, microfluidic systems for immunodiagnostics and analytics. Project ideas from the university and Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany are selected and worked on after a joint agreement. We work together on innovative research projects and ensure bilateral technology transfer with short communication channels. This collaboration hence provides the link between fundamental research in academia and product development in industry.
Long-term strategic partnership
The joined lab is an institutional pillar of the strategic partnership between the TU Darmstadt and Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany and has been established in 2006 working on "Printable Electronics". January 2016 marked a new milestone for the EMD Lab @ TU Darmstadt switching to the newly targeted topic "low-instrumented diagnostics and analytics".
The long-term, strategic partnership of TU Darmstadt and Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany includes even more aspects like jointly run Junior Labs in chemistry and biology, scholarships, PhD grants, guest lecturerers, the co-organized Emanuel Merck Lectureship (EMLS), joint brainstorming workshops and many bilateral research collaborations. This well-established partnership demonstrates a strong commitment to the City of Science Darmstadt, the location of our global headquarter.
