Our Brand

…is rooted in science and clearheaded research, but with a vibrant energy and a passionate interest in the world around us. We look closer and discover solutions as a foundation for our groundbreaking products and technologies which ultimately enrich people’s lives.
The look and feel of our brand is inspired by the shapes and colors found under the microscope in both science and nature. This is why you can discover colorful cells and strings in our visual appearance that will remind you of organic or synthetic patterns. Even the letters in our custom typeface are derived from the same shapes. The character of our brand expresses the excitement we have for our research and development. At the same time it shows the joy our work creates when one of our products actually improves a person’s life.

EMD is an abbreviation for ‘Emanuel Merck Darmstadt’. All businesses are united by our bold and colorful vibrant M.
Although we operate under different names in these two countries, all our businesses are united by a common purpose: to advance technologies for life. We aim to co-create a better world together with our partners and customers, and for patients.

Our origins

Founded in 1668 in Darmstadt, Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany is the world's oldest pharmaceutical and chemical company. In the 19th century, the success of our export business to the United States led to the establishment of an office in New York in 1887, which gave rise to our subsidiary Merck & Co. four years later. Owing to World War I, Merck & Co. was expropriated in 1917. The two companies have been separate ever since.
To make it easier to distinguish between the two companies, clear rules stipulate the rights to the name and the trademark:
Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany holds the rights to the name and the trademark "MERCK" internationally except for the United States and Canada, where we operate as EMD Serono, MilliporeSigma and EMD Performance Materials.

Publication of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany.
There are two different, unaffiliated companies that use the name MERCK. Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, which operates this website, uses the firm name “Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany,” in the United States and Canada, and also uses “EMD Serono” in biopharma, “MilliporeSigma” in life science and “EMD Performance Materials” in materials business. The other company, Merck & Co., Inc. holds the rights in the trademark MERCK in the United States and Canada. Merck & Co. is not affiliated with or related to Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, which owns the MERCK trademark in all other countries of the world.   To reflect such fact and to avoid any confusion, certain logos, terms and business descriptions of the publications on this website have been substituted or modified, such as by referring to “Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany” instead of “Merck” standing alone.  Publications on this webpage, therefore, slightly deviate from the otherwise identical versions accessible outside the United States and Canada.
