Our products help to overcome global challenges, such as climate change or resource scarcity, and we support our customers in achieving their sustainability goals.

Sustainable products and packaging

We want to reduce the environmental and health impacts of our products throughout their entire life cycle, from their manufacture to use through to disposal. In addition, we want to support our customers in improving the sustainability footprint of their products. To do so, we start right when product development begins.

Packaging protects our products from external influences and ensures they reach our customers undamaged. Therefore, we are optimizing the size, weight and recyclability of our packaging while keeping our products safe and sound.

Cyrene: a green solvent

Solvents are used for a diverse range of applications, including chemical cleaning, for printer ink or as nail polish remover. Unfortunately, many solvents are harmful to the environment, which is why they are subject to strict legal restrictions. For this reason, we developed the environmentally sound solvent Cyrene™ together with the Australian Circa Group and the University of York (United Kingdom). It is biologically extracted from raw materials that regrow quickly and its manufacture is practically energy-neutral. With Cyrene™, our Life Science business ensures a sustainable pattern for consumption and production and thus supports SDG target 12.4 of achieving the environmentally sound management of chemicals and all wastes throughout their life cycle.

    Filtration with less plastic

    Our greener alternative to our Stericup® sterile filtration system, the Stericup® E, allows our customers to connect the bottle containing the sample being filtered directly to the Stericup® E filtration unit, thus avoiding the use of a plastic funnel. Therefore, this product reduces the amount of plastic used and the amount and size of plastic and corrugated packaging. The unit of sale is then lighter and smaller, which leads to a reduction of CO2 emissions during transport. In addition, less space is needed to store the product at our distribution centers or at customers’ facilities, while reducing the volume and cost of waste disposal for our customers. Taking the entire life cycle into consideration, this significantly reduces the global warming potential of the product.

    OLEDs – less energy, more power

    OLEDs – organic light-emitting diodes – are the future of display technology: Their brilliant colors and high contrasts lead to a particularly high-quality image. But there is even more to these OLEDs: They can even be developed to be flexible, foldable or rollable. At the same time, OLEDs also use electricity only when they really need it. Each OLED pixel lights up on its own and does not need any backlighting as is necessary for conventional LCD screens. The displays are thus not only considerably flatter and brighter, but they also consume less energy. Thanks to the considerably lower energy consumption of the OLEDs, they are frequently used in smartphones and large screens with a particularly high resolution. OLED technology helps improve the energy efficiency of display significantly.
