The Innovators’ Club is back, with more tools and insights to help you grow your business!

This time, Christian Buchholz dropped by our Innovation Center in Darmstadt, Germany to tell us about Innovationdigging, a new tool to help teams channel their creativity towards the most fertile areas for innovation.

Taking its lead from the methods of professional archaeology, innovationdigging aims to subdivide the product concept into closely defined fields for innovation from the very beginning of the development process. Teams then rate each area to define top priorities for the ideation and iteration phases, and work on those priorities together.

Amateur archaeologists rarely employ such systematic efforts when deciding where to start digging, and often work alone, only meeting to compare notes with other archaeologists at the end of the day. Professional archeologists, however, work in teams from the very beginning of a project, and use a simple voting system to select the priority digging sites, which all team members then work on. In so doing, they focus the efforts of the whole team on the specific area which is generally considered within the team to be the most important for the project as a whole, while keeping a record of other fields which have been singled out for attention by their teammates. This reduces wasted resources, allows for a deeper penetration into the areas of most importance and makes sure no areas of interest are accidentally forgotten about.

After extensive first-hand research in the field, Christian Buchholz and his colleagues at Verrochio Institute for Innovation Competence developed a tool to help innovators segment, evaluate and prioritise areas for innovation within their businesses. To watch the whole talk and Q&A, head over to our Facebook page. Speaking of Q&A, we at the Innovation Center have another milestone to share with you.
