Bread ration for the evening meal, 1943
textblock default title
This bread ration was given to the company employee Heinrich Fleck (1900-1988) in 1943 for the night shift respectively night watch in the air-raid shelter, after he had previously worked his regular 10 hours. He was given a very thin slice of sausage to go with it. He kept the bread, according to the motto: "If we're already starving, this piece of bread won't save us."
The slice of bread is indeed 80 years old and a symbol of the shortages that prevailed then and that we encounter again today when we look towards Ukraine.

Heinrich Fleck, who had been employed in the shipping department (lastly packing group manager) at Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, since 1915 and also served as a soldier in World War II, survived these difficult times. He remained at the company until his retirement in 1965, i.e., for 50 years!
