Darmstadt, Germany, December 13, 2018 – Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, a leading science and technology company, today announced that will showcase a selection of innovative architectural solutions at BAU 2019. At the exhibition, the company will feature its newly launched dynamic solar shading windows eyrise™ s350 as well as its protective coating solution for building façades Durazane®. BAU, the world’s leading trade fair for architecture, will take place from January 14 to January 19, 2019 in Munich, Germany.

“In modern architecture, meeting functional and aesthetic needs fuels the demand for smart innovations. Our range of products for the architecture sector support both functionality and design to bring creative visions to life and transform the spaces where we live,” said Michael Heckmeier, Head of Display Solutions within the Performance Materials business sector of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany.

eyrise™ s350: Unleashing the power of “lightwellness”

In October, Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, unveiled its new product brand for dynamic liquid crystal windows eyrise™ and announced the commercial launch of eyrise s350. The new instant solar shading windows provide unparalleled comfort, or a “lightwellness” effect. This is achieved by cutting solar glare on demand to instantly adjust indoor light, while preserving transparency and color neutrality to the outdoors. With an unrivaled range of sizes, shapes and colors, eyrise s350 also offers architects exceptional design freedom for aesthetic expression.

The Kirow Niemeyer Sphere and the FC Group’s new headquarters building are two of the first eyrise™ projects currently underway. The Niemeyer Sphere located at the headquarters of the crane manufacturer Kirow in Leipzig, Germany, is one of the last works of renowned Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer. The prestigious architectural project will be realized using triangular versions of liquid crystal windows from Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany. Additionally, the FC Group’s new headquarters building in Karlsruhe, Germany will become the first eyrise™ full-façade installation. The building is scheduled to open in 2019 and was designed by the architects at 3deluxe.

At the BAU exhibition, the company will showcase the Niemeyer XS pavilion, an impressive demonstration of its contribution to the Kirow Niemeyer Sphere. The six-meter-high partial replica of this project will allow BAU attendees to experience both the outdoor and indoor impact of dynamic window technology from Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany.

eyrise s350 is powered by licrivision®, the company’s liquid crystal material solution for dynamic glass. “With eyrise™, we have successfully expanded our expertise in liquid crystals to a new and unique technology for intelligent window systems. We are proud to be the top liquid crystal material supplier of this new application and the driver of this innovative solution,” Michael Heckmeier underscores.

Durazane™: Protecting the life of exterior surfaces

Building façades are permanently exposed to sunshine, rain, moisture, and snow. With the organic polysilazane Durazane™, Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, provides a powerful solution for the protection of exterior surfaces. High-temperature stability, water and dirt repellency, scratch protection and corrosion prevention are some of the unique properties offered by Durazane™ to keep surfaces looking and feeling pristine.

Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, will also present its new WAY technology that prevents yellowing and provides resistance against weathering, chemicals and temperature for plastics applications. The special encapsulation of these pigments imparts high UV stability, enabling them to withstand even extreme conditions. This makes the WAY technology especially interesting for architectural applications with their inevitably high exposure to sunlight. Visitors to the company’s booth can observe the metallic effects of these highly functional pigments in the frames of the liquid crystal windows. Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, will also be showcasing a number of additional architectural applications from its pearlescent effect pigments portfolio, offering visitors an opportunity to experience the “touch and feel” of the different coatings.

The Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, booth at BAU will be located in Hall C, booth #538.
