We believe that science is a force for good that enables us to solve many of humanity's most pressing challenges. We are at the start of an exciting journey towards more sustainable products, technologies and business models, a voyage we are commencing with more than 350 years of experience behind us and the right partners by our side. Along the way, we are striving to innovate solutions that help our customers boost their own sustainability. In this endeavor, we are focusing on four key aspects:
- Circular economy: Across our entire value chain, we intend to create a system of closed loops and achieve resource efficiency.
- Digitalization for sustainability: Digitalization is enabling innovations that are both sustainable and economically viable.
- Innovative raw materials: Novel, responsibly extracted raw materials are the foundation for advancing product sustainability.
- Expertise & partnerships: Our partnerships and our own capabilities enable us to blaze new trails.
In a circular economy, the existing raw materials and materials are used and re-used for as long as possible. Considering the resource scarcity facing our planet, this approach is crucial because it conserves non-renewable raw materials. We are seeking ways to close the loop across our entire value chain. Our strategy is not to simply re-use waste material as thoroughly as possible, but instead to prevent waste wherever and whenever we can. We apply this approach from the very start of the process, including procurement and product design.

Opportunity for a more sustainable future
As a leading science and technology company, we see the circular economy primarily as an opportunity for us to promote sustainable development. In fact, we can point to many good examples of our actions for sustainability. In our Life Science business sector, for instance, our solvent Cyrene™ provides a safe, green alternative to conventional petroleum-based substances. And in our Electronics business sector, our RonaFlair portfolio offers environmentally compatible functional fillers for skincare products – an alternative that is free of microplastics.

For more than 350 years, we have been pushing the boundaries of possibility. And we intend to continue doing so in the future, with technologies that can transform the playing field for entire industries, drive the change to more sustainable products and improve the lives of millions. In order to solve humanity's most pressing challenge through science, we need to join forces. This is why we are inviting scientists from all over the world to participate in our open innovation program and offer research grants in the area of sustainability.
At our headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany, we are working together intensively with the Technical University (TU) of Darmstadt. With the realignment of this strategic research partnership in 2021, sustainability is now at the heart of our collaboration. We defined four focus areas for joint research projects: circular economy, digital sustainability, responsible handling of raw materials and new alternatives, and innovative processes and procedures inspired by biology. Together we will set up a joint research platform “Sustainability Hub”, which will be open to all our business sectors and all departments of the TU Darmstadt. Moreover, our company will provide additional funding for national and international academic collaboration partners who are joining forces. This should make the joint Sustainability Hub research platform broader and more international.
