#Microbiotiful - Belly Button
We tested a child’s belly button with one of our culture media … and detected some of its tiny “inhabitants”.
Experiment N. 03
Ever heard of the Belly Button Biodiversity Project? You might think this is a joke but the project really does exist, and it’s serious science. Founded by researchers at the North Carolina State University, the project studies the diversity of microbes in the navel of human beings and how their composition varies depending on age, sex, ethnicity, location, and health. Since its inception in 2011 the project has looked into more than 500 belly buttons.
