Applying AI throughout the entire semiconductor supply chain will foster both efficiency and innovation, making co-opetition (collaboration and competition) essential for shaping the future. Key strategies must be implemented, from design and manufacturing to system-level integration, to strengthen Europe's position in the global market. This approach will create a synergistic effect where the combined output exceeds the sum of individual efforts, encapsulated in the idea that "1+1=5."

To remain competitive, Europe must activate these strategies by 2027, ensuring its leadership in the AI revolution and solidifying its leadership in technology.

The Industry Strategy Symposium Europe brings together executives and high-level experts to offer microelectronics market forecasts, as well as insights into the latest economic and societal trends, geopolitics, and technologies shaped by the microelectronics industry.

Enabling the Semiconductor Ecosystem in Europe

    12 Mar 2025 - FROM 9:50 TO 10:10 UTC+01:00

Abstract

While it’s clear that AI and generative AI will continue to drive key technology trends in semiconductor chip design and manufacturing, uncertainties in the global supply chain persist due to ongoing geopolitical tensions. With the growing opportunities presented by AI and its applications, the EU has a significant opportunity to revitalize its semiconductor industry and play a vital role in the ecosystem. However, there are gaps to address, and strategies needed to harness the strengths of local players across the value chain. The advanced semiconductors used for AI applications have specific requirements for the ecosystem. Specific materials play an essential role in these semiconductors and are key enablers of miniaturization. In this presentation, we will explore the critical areas and opportunities for supply resilience and innovation from the perspective of a leading material supplier. The identified topics will require collective attention of European and global semiconductor stakeholders to ensure mutual growth and success in the future. Key topics will include a focus on innovation, a strategy to build resilient supply chains, and the importance of fostering closer collaboration across the value chain. Additionally, an important factor in achieving this goal will be the ability to differentiate through the use of environmentally sustainable solutions.

As a leading global materials and equipment supplier based in Germany, we are committed being an innovative and transformative partner in this endeavor, applying our Materials Intelligence to unlock the potential of next-generation chips. This session will offer insights into how we can work together to help shape the future of the industry.
